Supported File Types

Voicethread allows the use of multiple file types to create a voicethread.

  • Text documents: DOC, DOCX, PDF, ODT, XLS, XLSX, and ODS files.
  • Presentations: PPT, PPTX, ODP, and PDF files.
  • Uploading text documents and presentations will turn each page or slide into a single slide in VoiceThread, so a 12 page word doc will become a 12 slide voicethread, a 20 slide powerpoint becomes a 20 slide VoiceThread. PDF is recommended for best compatibility.
  • Images: JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP files. Uploading a series of images will create a slideshow.
  • Audio files: MP3 or WAV formats.
  • Video: Most MOV, WMV or AVI files. For best results use H.264 encoding.

 5. Commenting on a VoiceThread

Once you record your comment, VoiceThread will ask if you want to Save, Cancel or Record more. You have the option to delete your VoiceThread comment at any point. To do so, hover your cursor over your comment while it is playing and select the trash can.

If/when leaving a video and/or audio comment, you will be prompted to configure your Flash Player settings. Click “Allow” to allow VT to use your webcam and/or microphone.

To navigate out of this section, click on the title of your VoiceThread in the top left corner of your screen or hit the "X" to exit back to the previous screen.

6. Sharing a VoiceThread

VoiceThreads are private by default. To grant access to a group or individuals, click on the "Secure" tab. In order to share with individuals or groups, you will first need to add a contact for each person with which you wish to share VoiceThreads.

Note: By using VoiceThread with Blackboard, instructors can share VoiceThreads with students without adding them individually or creating a group (see instructions here).

To change publishing options, go to the "Who has access" tab.

To share the link to your VoiceThread, go to the "Basic" tab and click on the "Copy Link" button.
