Canon Vixia HF R11

Sony HVR-Z1U

The Sony HVR-Z1U is the more professional version of the HVR 1000u and includes more external controls, similar to the Panasonic DVX-100-B. This camera is capable of recording in SD (standard definiton) or 1080i HDV (high definition) directly onto a regular MiniDV tape. Recording to harddrive is possible with this camera, but not supported by the GNMC. This camera DOES provide phantom power for microphones that require it.

Sony HVR-1000u

The Sony HVR-HD1000U is an HDV camcorder specifically designed for videographers looking for a shoulder-mounted camera. Ideal for event work, the camera has minimal external controls and is capable of recording in SD (standard definiton) or 1080i HDV (high definition) directly onto a regular MiniDV tape. Recording to harddrive is possible with this camera, but not supported by the GNMC. This camera does NOT provide phantom power to microphones that require it.

Panasonic DVX-100-B

The Panasonic DVX-100-B is a professional-grade SD (standard definition) camcorder that offers film-like 24-frame per second recording. This camera records to miniDV tape. This camera DOES provide phantom power for microphones that require it.

Canon ZR960

The Canon ZR960 is an entry level SD (standard definition) camcorder that is reliable and simple to use. This camera records to miniDV tape. This camera does NOT provide phantom power to microphones that require it.

Flip Video - Ultra HD Camcorder

The Flip Video UltraHD Camcorder can record up to 120 minutes of 1280 x 720p HD video to the 8GB built-in memory. When you're done shooting just connect the flip out USB arm to your PC or Mac for instant sharing via email or social media sites. The built-in FlipShare software compresses your HD video to an Internet friendly size and helps you to email, edit, capture stills from video, and upload. This camera does not have a microphone input, and therefore does not work with external microphones.

Flip Video Camcorder

The Flip Video Camcorder records to a 2GB internal memory that downloads Internet-ready files for emailing and video sharing sites. The included Flip software helps you easily organize and archive your footage in both Microsoft Windows and Mac. No tapes are required. This camera does not have a microphone input, and therefore does not work with external microphones.

Lowel Pro Light Kit

This Kit is intended for advanced users and is best used as an accent light, backlight, or fill light. The light features a dial for adjusting for a wide sweep or spot-light and is a weaker wattage than lights in the 3-light kit. This light kit is NOT recommended as a user's primary light source.

Tripod - Basic

Used for stabilizing video camera during shooting, and well-suited for simple, static shoots, such as interviews, and basic camera movements requiring stabilization. Very stable Manfrotto stand with an easy to use Microfluid 128 LP head. A swivel-mounted head and bar allow for smooth pans and tilt shots. Also features three leg sections with snappable leg locks for easy setup and breakdown.

Tripod - Advanced

Used for stabilizing video camera during shooting, and best-suited for dynamic camerawork where very smooth and precise control over camera movement is desired. Features very stable Manfrotto stand with professional Manfrotto 503DV ball-head. A swivel-mounted head and bar allow for smooth pans and tilt shots. Also features three leg sections with snappable leg locks for easy setup and breakdown.

Reflector Kit (5 in 1)

This is a Photoflex 42" collapsible reflector with 5 unique, swappable surfaces. Photoflex LiteDiscs and MultiDiscs are designed for use in the studio, or on location. They can add light to shadowy areas, add or subtract color casts, or diffuse harsh light. Recommended as fill-lights in conjunction with a 3-light kit when recording interviews.

On-Camera Light Kit

This kit allows you to attach a small, reporting-style light to our high end cameras. This kit is especially well-suited for the shoulder-mounted Sony HVR 1000u. The light is powered by a battery belt that weighs 9.5 pounds.

Equipment Cart

This very light-weight, compact equipment cart can carry a large load and is very useful for patrons checking out a large quantity of equipment.

3-Light Kit

The 3 Light Kit is a compact, highly versatile lighting solution for most basic video lighting needs. The kit includes 3 lights. Advanced users filming interviews are encouraged to pair this item with a Reflector Kit (for fill light).

Bescor On Camera Light

The Bescor LED-70 is an on-camera, dimmable, daylight balanced (6500°K) LED light designed to combine bright output with a compact, highly flexible form factor. Powered by either 4 standard AA batteries or an optional AC power adapter, the unit's 96 LED bulbs produce an ultra bright, 70W-equivalent beam with a reach of up to 30 feet.

Bescor A/V Bracket

The Bescor VB-50 A/V Bracket attaches to tripod mount of your camcorder. The VB-50 can be mounted to the camera alone, or between the camcorder and tripod. A rubber side grip allows for comfortable use. A top (cold) shoe mount allows for the addition of video lights and microphones.

Sennheiser Wireless Lavalier Microphone Kit

This kit includes 1 small lavalier (lapel) microphone and 1 wireless transmitter and 1 receiver. Also included is a transmitter made for plugging directly into the bottom of a handheld microphone (the microphone itself is NOT included). The lapel-microphone transmitter is easily clipped onto a wearer's belt or pocket, and receiver includes a hot-shoe mount for high-end video cameras. An alternative to the Audio-Technica Wireless Microphone system also available. Requires 4 AA batteries per kit.

Boom Pole Kit (inc. Shotgun Microphone)

Use the shotgun microphone alone, or in conjunction with the included boom-pole. The shotgun microphone includes wind filter. The hotgun microphone is ideal for capturing targeted or focused sound from a particular direction. The microphone performs best when close to the source, but can still capture sound from far away. This microphone requires either one AA battery or phantom power to operate.

Stereo Microphone

Useful for recording an entire group like at a concert or play. It is NOT usually used as a vocal mic for one person. Includes 16 ft. 5 inch 5 Pin XLF cable which converts to two 3 pin XLR cables for true stereo sound. Uses standard AA battery. Excellent microphone for use with Marantz digital audio recorders.

Sony MP3 Digital Audio Recorder (Red)

This small, handheld digital audio recorder has 1GB of built-in memory, letting you store up to 287 hours of audio in either the .MP3/.WMA audio files, or up to 18 hours of music files. Olympus LS-11 Audio Kit

The LS-11 from Olympus is a Linear PCM audio recorder for studio-quality recording in the field. This portable unit can record at rates up to 24-bit/96kHz to WMA, MP3 or WAV formats onto its 8GB internal memory. An SD/SDHC card slot is also available for additional data storage. This audio kit includes an Audio Technica AT8010 microphone.

Sony MP3 Digital Audio Recorder (Black)

Audio Accessories

Field Mixer

Professional portable audio mixer for use in outdoor video shoots. Provides three XLR connections for three distinct audio feeds. Compatible with a variety of audio sources including dynamic or condensor microphones. Features low cut filter to minimize common environmental noises such as wind and rumbling. Color coded LED meters provide easy indication of audio levels. Only two 9V batteries needed for portable use.

Headphones

Use to listen to VHS and DVDs in Gelardin viewing stations. Headphones may leave the library, but are subject to the regular 24-hour check-out period.

Headphone Adapter

These are necessary for anyone who wishes to use headphones in the conjunction with either the Canon ZR-800 or Canon ZR-960 camcorders. Because these two cameras do not have headphone jacks, this workaround was developed, and plugs into the Yellow input.

XLR Cables

M-BOX

Only necessary when a user wishes to run ProTools software on supported platforms in the GNMC.

Sony Pro Headphones

The MDR-7506 is a staple within the recording, film and live arenas. The ClearChat Comfort USB Headset from Logitech is a stereo headset designed for use with a computer. The headset features stereo headphones and an integrated microphone. It connects to your computer via the standard USB interface.

iPad SD Card Reader

Use the SD Card Reader to import photos and videos directly from your camera's SD card. Connect it to your iPad, then insert your digital camera's SD card into the slot.

After you make the connection, your iPad automatically opens the Photos app, which lets you choose which photos and videos to import, then organizes them into albums.

iPad USB Camera Connector

The Camera Connector features a USB interface. Just plug it into the dock connector port on your iPad, then attach your digital camera or iPhone using a USB cable (not included). iPhone 3G is not supported.

iPad Kit

The iPad is a line of tablet computers designed and marketed by Apple Inc., primarily as a platform for audio-visual media including books, periodicals, movies, music, games, apps and web content. The iPad runs on iOS, the same operating system used on Apple's iPod Touch and iPhone, and can run its own applications as well as iPhone applications. Without modification or a developer certificate, the iPad will only run programs approved by Apple and distributed via the Apple App Store.

Kindle Fire

Color touchscreen tablet connects wirelessly via Wi-Fi allowing you to download and stream music, videos, Kindle content and apps stored on your Amazon account. You can also browse the web using the built-in Amazon Silk web browser and access your e-mails using the preinstalled e-mail app. Once you've downloaded books, magazines, videos, MP3s or apps to your device, a wireless connection is not required to access these items.

Kindle DX

The Kindle is an e-reading device developed and sold by Amazon.com which enables users to download and read books, newspapers, documents and blogs. The Kindle uses e-ink technology which creates a similar reading experience to paper than other reflective electronic displays; this enables users to read on a Kindle in direct sunlight with no glare. Another very useful feature is that the battery life on a Kindle can last up to 2 months.

Our equipment offerings are vast and varied. We have simple gear for simple projects, and professional gear for true (and aspiring) professionals.

Policies

Equipment check-outs are for up to 72 hours. Please plan accordingly.
Due to the high demand for equipment, we are only able to grant 72-hour checkouts on a case-by-case basis depending on availability. If you need equipment for longer than 72 hours, please arrange extended loans with the Head of the New Media Center at least one-week in advance of the intended checkout time.
Reserve equipment by phone (202-687-7410) or in person. The GNMC is located on the 1st floor of Lauinger library. You can also reserve equipment yourself via our online reservation system.
Please be on time to pick up your gear, or call to let us know you will be late. Due to high demand, we reserve the right to cancel your reservation if you are more than 30 minutes late.
Fines for equipment kits are $5 per hour late. Bring your equipment back on time! See detailed fine information under the library's borrowing policies.

General tips:

When you receive your equipment, check that your battery is charged and that your equipment works. The GNMC charges batteries and inspects equipment regularly, but as responsible producers, it behooves you to check your gear before taking it into the field.
Some of our cameras record to miniDV tapes, which you need to purchase yourself. Be prepared! The GU Bookstore carries miniDV tapes.
If you are picking up more than 2 pieces of bulky equipment, consider bringing a friend or also reserving an equipment cart to help out.
We very highly recommend that you learn how to use your equipment before renting it. We have online tutorials and guides, or you can schedule a one-on-one consultation for hands-on guidance. Training is mandatory for some equipment. See below for details.

Training is mandatory for some equipment.

For the safety of our advanced equipment, some items require that you receive in-person training before you can reserve it or check it out. Previously, the below items did not require any training.

Will users be able to make a reservation for equipment that they are not trained for? You will only be able to reserve restricted equipment after completing a short training. Consultations can be scheduled 3 days in advance. Please plan ahead, and contact us if you have any questions.

What about returning users who have used the equipment before? You will need to take the training even if you have used restricted equipment in the past. However, if you wish to forego the training because you are confident in your experience with the equipment, you may speak to a supervisor about becoming an authorized user. To speak to a supervisor, please come to the front desk during normal hours or give us a call at 202-687-7410. The supervisor will ask you a couple of questions about your experience.
