Library to Host Alumni Writers Panel

On Tuesday, October 21, the Library and the Department of English will host a panel of prominent alumni writers for Georgetown Writes: Alumni Experiences in the Literary, Film and Magazine Worlds. Panelists M. Lindsay Bierman (C’87), Mark Poirier (C’91) and Christopher Reich (F’83) will share their experiences in the field, offer advice for aspiring writers of all kinds, and provide insight into the evolving future of the writing profession.

All three panelists bring a wealth of experience in various parts of the writing industry to the panel. M. Lindsay Bierman, currently the chancellor of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, has been writing for publications such as Architecture and Interior Design for decades and recently completed four years as the editor in chief of Southern Living, the eighth-largest monthly paid magazine the country.

Mark Poirier started his career as a novelist and short story writer before moving into screenwriting. He is the author of the novels Modern Ranch Living and Goats as well as the short story collections Unsung Heroes of American Industry and Naked Pueblo. In addition, he wrote the screenplays for Smart People (2008), starring Dennis Quaid, Thomas Haden Church and Sarah Jessica Parker; the adaptation of his novel Goats (2012), starring Vera Farmiga; and Hateship Loveship (2013), starring Kristen Wiig.

In contrast, Christopher Reich began his career as a stock broker and banker in Switzerland before deciding to move back to the United States and become an author. His first book, Numbered Account, was published in 1998 and became a New York Times bestseller, and has been translated into 23 languages. Since then, he has authored eight more bestselling thrillers, including The Patriot’s Club (2004), which won the 2006 International Thriller Writers Award for best novel.

Georgetown Writes will be held in Lohrfink Auditorium in the Hariri Building. The program will begin at 7:00 pm, preceded by a reception at 6:30. A book sale and signing will follow the panel. All are welcome to attend; please RSVP on the Library’s website.
