MedStar Staff Borrowing Policies

Medstar employees (ME) have limited borrowing privileges at Lauinger Library, Blommer Science Library, and Woodstock Theological Library. All Medstar employees must present their Medstar ID for library entry and to check out books. (If you have an old Medstar ID wihtout a photo please bring with your a valid, government-issued photo ID: you will need both to access the building and to borrow books.) Privileges are non-transferrable, and Medstar faculty cannot set up proxy library accounts.

NUMBER OF BOOKS: An ME may have a maximum of six books checked out at one time from any combination of the libraries.

LOAN PERIOD: The ME Items subject to recall 4 weeks after loan period begins, or 1 week if needed for course reserves.

RENEWING BOOKS: Books may be renewed online or by phone up to three times unless they have been requested by another patron. After a book has been renewed the third time it must be physically taken the library where it can be checked-in and out for a new cycle. Books can be renewed:

• Online via GEORGE at the YOUR ACCOUNT page.
• By telephone at 202 687-7607.
• In person at a library circulation desk.
• Via email by replying to electronic courtesy and overdue notices. 

OVERDUE FINES: Overdue notices are sent to your email as a courtesy. Patrons are solely responsible for knowing due dates. Failure to receive notices is not grounds for dismissal of fines.

• Circulating items: $0.25 per day per book
• Recalled items: $5.00 per day per book, and a block is placed on your record until recalled books are returned.
• Accounts are suspended once a patron reaches $25.00 in fines.

LOST OR DAMAGED MATERIALS: A patron with lost or damaged materials may (1) pay a $67.00 replacement fee, a $30 processing fee, and any fines up to $10.00, or (2) bring a copy of the item to the circulation desk for replacement consideration by the Library. If accepted, there will be a $15 processing fee plus any fines accrued up to $10.00.

MEDSTAR EMPLOYEES MAY NOT:

• Borrow course reserves at Blommer and Lauinger.
• Borrow Gelardin New Media Center material.
• Use the Picchi Multimedia Room and A/V Editing Rooms.
• Have off-campus access to most Lauinger and Blommer databases and online journals.
• Use Lauinger's Interlibrary Loan service.
• Have access to any Main Campus Libraries' consortia (i.e. WRLC, Article Reach, CIRLA).
