We are currently installing new doors in the stairwell in Lauinger Library. During this time, visitors will not be able to use landings that are under construction, either to enter that floor or pass through en route to another. We encourage visitors to use the elevators, although the stairwell may still be used to access floors that are not under construction. Landings under construction should only be used in the case of an emergency.

Madonna and Child with Saints

Master of Hoogstraeten
Netherlands; active first third of sixteenth century
Madonna and Child with Saints, c. 1525
oil on panel; 21.75 x 16 inches
Gift of L.N.W. Abrons, 1957

This intricately painted, enamel-like scene of adoration inside the courtyard of a medieval fortress was created in the mid-sixteenth century in the Gothic tradition of Rogier Van der Weyden and Gérard David. The artist, whose work is rarely seen in this country, was a native of Hoogstraeten in modern-day Belgium, where he created a noteworthy multi-panel painting for the Church of St. Catherine between 1517 and 1533. The Georgetown panel, which is similar in composition and subject, was probably a related commission.
